Get in touch

Tell us what you are seeing and we will tell you what it usually means. Half of the calls we take get narrowed down before anyone drives out — a description of the stain, the age of the house and what vents into the chimney is often enough to say which of five things it probably is.

Every request gets a reply the same working day.

What helps us most

  • Roughly when the house was built
  • What the chimney serves — open fireplace, wood stove or insert, gas fireplace, furnace, water heater, or more than one
  • What you are seeing or smelling, and when it started
  • Whether it happens in all rain or only wind-driven rain, or only during winter thaws
  • Whether the roof has been worked on recently
  • A photograph, if you have one you can take safely from the ground

Storm damage and active leaks: leave a message any time and we return calls first thing.

When to treat it as urgent

Call rather than emailing if: you smell gas, a carbon monoxide alarm has sounded, you have had a fire that roared and you are not sure whether it was in the flue, or masonry has fallen from the chimney. For a carbon monoxide alarm, leave the house first and call the gas utility and 911 — then call us about the flue afterwards.
